Lincoln believed the Civil War was necessary in order to bring all of the states back into the Union, abolishing slavery was a secondary goal for Lincoln at the time

One of Lincoln's many quotes about slavery. He is saying that slaveholders who are denying freedom to their slaves, shouldn not have freedom for themselves.
This map shows where slavery was legal in 1860. As you can see, mostly southern states (orange) are the states relying on slaves. The northern states (yellow) are the states who have banned slavery or do not use it.
